Daryl Hance

Daryl Hance is an American singer/guitarist from Jacksonville, Florida of a southern flair, steeped in all the vintage blues, funk, and rock and roll music. Also, a founding member of JJ Grey & Mofro (originally billed as Mofro), although no longer playing with the band since going out on his own in 2010. Conjuring up a soothing air of smolderingly hypnotic bluesy guitar passages and rock solid funky grooves, Hance is an artist who sings his songs and his guitar with a cool abandonment. Contrasting from dark and brooding to a recognition and celebration of all things, his songs and music are as much about the moment we all live in as they are a reflection of experiences that span a lifetime. A prolific well straight out of the book of normal everyday life. With his debut album Hallowed Ground, Hance has stepped out from his 12-year long role as guitarist for southern rock and soul band JJ Grey & Mofro, just as if compadre Grey and his Mofro cohorts eased their skiff up close enough to the bank for Hance to jump off and venture back out into his own neck of the woods. A landscape decorated by an unrelenting sonic-blast of groovin' rock and roll music built of humid-heavy blues-driven guitar grooves, fully-cranked funky riffs, soothing slide and acoustic guitars. All cushioning a very laid back and largely introspective vocal style atop thick bass lines and pocket-locked drums. Daryl about his music... "it's bluesy funky rock music focused on songs and strong grooves. Largely a sum of all my biggest influences rooted in older blues, funk, and rock music... Curtis Mayfield, Jimi Hendrix, Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Tony Joe White, Muddy Waters... with some early Black Sabbath-AC/DC kind of hard rock funkiness to it." "Lyrically, most of the songs come from life experiences... love, relationships, sex, fear, hope, etc... The sort of things that life offers up to everyone I guess. Dynamically things can get loud but I tend to lean toward the mellower side of loud. I like to feel the bass and drums, and ride on top of a fat groove. So rhythmically its more rooted in the funk area like Sly and the Family Stone, Muscle Shoals, Memphis/Stax, etc... I'm sure a little New Orleans and Motown rhythm inadvertently ended up in the mix somewhere too. It is loud guitar music but, I do emphasize that it's all about fat beats, monster grooves, and wide open spaces. The guitar more so rides or bounces around on top and digs down in there to work the groove now and again." "Live, It's music that people can move around and have a good time to, in the form of a dynamic three piece band that plays mostly 3 to 4 minute songs in the spirit of an old-school singing along rock and roll show!" Residing amongst the pine forest of Northeast Florida miles from the nearest town on a lot of land purchased by his father back in 1980, Daryl Hance was born in Topeka, Kansas on November 27th 1968. His family moved from Topeka in July 1972 and he spent much of the early part of his life in the zone between the bright city lights and the sticks just south of Atlanta, GA during the 1970's and early 1980's. Making frequent trips with his family back to their home town of Jacksonville, Florida throughout this period of his life, Daryl became accustomed early on to Florida being home. His family relocated back there in January 1983 in the midst of his 9th grade school year. Other than living in London, England for 12 months during late 1990s, he has called Northeast Florida home ever since. Finding his way to the guitar during his last year of high school by way of his 1986 tax return check, he purchased a Black Squire Stratocaster and a Peavy amplifier, and later that same year started a band with friends. With this band over the next three years he played a few gigs around Jacksonville and spent countless nights making music in a trailer located in rural Baker County, Florida. They also rented and shared a few practice rooms in the Riverside area of Jacksonville with other bands during this time. Although his main instrument has always been guitar, Daryl became familiar with other instruments along the way as well. The bass guitar, the keys and piano a little from time to time, and picking up his first instrument again, the drums... "My first love was the drums, I just can't resist a beat that makes you move. I became exposed to the drums from being around friends and a cousin who had drum sets. I was hooked! I'll never forget being at a friend's house and him letting me play his drums when I was 11. I was so excited I immediately went home to tell my dad that was what I wanted to do and to ask if I could get a drum set. Well he wasn't home, so I walked several miles to where he was (at a fishing buddy's house visiting) just to tell him that's what I wanted to do with my life. Well, several months later for my birthday he traded his friend a rifle for a set of drums for me. Then, about a year and a half later I came home from school one day and discovered my drum set was missing and dad's rifle was back on the gun rack in the den." In February 1990 Daryl received a call from JJ Grey, a friend he had met when they worked together at an air conditioning company on Jacksonville's west side back in 1986. Becoming re-aquainted they spent the early-mid 1990s piecing together several different projects before starting the rock and soul band Mofro (JJ Grey & Mofro) in the late 1990s. Releasing four acclaimed albums, they have been playing and touring almost constantly in the United States since 2001, as well as in Canada, Europe, and Australia . During this time, Hance has been steadily building up his own repertoire of homecrafted songs and musical ideas. Daryl has been writing music since he started playing guitar in 1986, but had only dabbled in songwriting from time to time. It wasn't until 1997 while recording music at home one night after work that he discovered he could actually sing and write songs for himself. After returning home to Florida from London in September 1999, where he had joined Grey in getting Mofro going, he went to work. When not touring with Grey and Mofro or working a day job, he spent much of his time writing and recording song demos and honing his craft. Working to make his voice and guitar at ease with one another. Armed with a strong debut in Hallowed Ground, he's already shared the stage with JJ Grey & Mofro, Chuck Prophet and The Mission Express, Jace Everett, The Legendary JCs, Damon Fowler, Tab Benoit, Amelia's Mechanics, and Thomas Wynn and the Believers. Performed at The Blackwater Music Festival, Faux Blood Festival, Antemesaris Rock and Roll People's Party, and seems to be set to share the stage with a whole lot of other friends and bands out there on the road very soon... so stay tuned!
